Plovdiv - Bachkovo Monastery – Assenova Fortress Sunny Beach

Early morning departure. Return late at night.

A trip through the countryside across to Plovdiv. Taking a stroll along the aged cobbled streets of the Old City. Free time for lunch in the city centre. Visit to the second largest Bulgarian monastery – the Bachkovo Monastery. The monastery is surrounded by the picturesque Rhodopean hills, which together with its impressive size and antiquity, make it one of the best-visited monasteries in Bulgaria. The monastery complex and the vicinity have become a well-developed tourist site with a multitude of shops, stalls and cafes, stringing the pedestrian alley to the monastery. Here for sale is offered literally everything that grows or is produced in the Rhodope Mountains – rare herbs, home-made wild-fruit jam, yoghurt and cheese made of goat and buffalo milk; Rhodopean woollen carpets and any variety of other things. Departure for Assenovgrad. Visit to the Assenova Fortress. The fortress has existed as early as Thracian times, was redesigned by the Byzantines during the 9th century, in order to guard the gates to the Aegean Pass and to secure the Byzantine border at this end.
